Cora's Story

In her third and final session, Cora explained how she had attended the health walk and thoroughly enjoyed herself, meeting other women, exploring the local area and had even made a friend who had recommended some other physical activities for women over 60 at a local leisure centre.

Cora is a 75 year old Caribbean lady who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2016. After recovering from having surgery and chemotherapy, she was referred to the Macmillan Social Prescribing service by her physiotherapist for help in finding physical activities in her community. Cora is a retired nurse and lives with her son in Waltham Forest.

Cora had three face-to-face sessions with a Macmillan Social Prescriber in Leyton. She said her main goal was to attend exercise classes local to her but it also came apparent that since moving away from her home in Luton and in with her son in East London their relationship had become strained. Cora felt that her independence was limited. She had only recently moved to Waltham Forest when she started her treatment and missed having a group of friends. In her first session, Cora described her reluctance to raise her frustration with her son, for fear of hurting his feelings.

Cora and her Macmillan Social Prescriber explored the options for physical activities which included a social element and identified a Health Walk not too far from her house which was aimed at people living with long-term health conditions. The Social Prescriber also found a rehabilitation programme for people living beyond cancer close to Cora's house where she could access 1:1 support over a 12 week programme aimed at strengthening muscle and building stamina.

In her third and final session, Cora explained how she had attended the health walk and thoroughly enjoyed herself, meeting other women, exploring the local area and had even made a friend who had recommended some other physical activities for women over 60 at a local leisure centre. She had got in touch with the leisure centre herself and had arranged to start some of their physical activities too. She shared that she had built the confidence to talk to her son about the recent strain in their relationship and she attributed this to the social prescribing sessions.
