Lord Mawson, founder of the Bromley by Bow Centre, gave an interview to the BBC on 10 June 2008 to explain why it is urgent that work needs to start now if London is to enjoy a lasting legacy from the Olympic Games in 2012.
Pointing out that there has been a lack of strategic leadership on the legacy of the Games, Lord Mawson argues that some of the lessons learnt about regeneration in Bromley by Bow over the past 25 years could be applied to the Olympic Park.
"The only way is appoint a leader with clear authority from the Mayor's office to shape the legacy for the Lower Lea valley", he said.
In response, London Mayor Boris Johnson has said he wants a "proper legacy masterplan" to map out the long term future for the Olympic Park after the Games have finished.
