11 August 2008
On what must have been one of the hottest days of the year so far, more than 90 volunteers from Lehman Brothers helped in the creation of a sustainable garden at Britannia Village school in Royal Docks. As well as landscaping the earth, they also helped to create composters and planters, built a shed, and helped finish other furniture for the garden. Other volunteers helped with weeding and tidying up around the school.
Green Dreams, a social enterprise at the Bromley by Bow Centre, organised the day, and helped lead the teams of volunteers through the various tasks.
When completed, the new garden will help the children at the school to learn about nature in a fun and interactive way. The garden has been designed by Green Dreams to be as environmentally sustainable as possible. Raw materials have been sourced from sustainable sources, and the garden will collect its own water source from rainwater.
Julia Hilton, who led the project, was impressed by the amount of work the volunteers put in. "They really have achieved a great deal today, especially seeing how hot it was. With their help, this project has really taken a huge step forward."
As well as helping Britannia Village school, the day also helped the volunteers to develop their own skills, particularly in team-working and communication.
The school plans to hold an open day later in the year to show off its new garden. Details to follow!
