HeartArt: Creating a culture of health for people with diabetes

HeartArt22 June 2009

The Royal College of Nursing has recently published a report on HeartArt, a series of art-based education workshops for people with diabetes at the Bromley by Bow Health Centre, led by Senior Practice Nurse Yvonne Coughlan.

HeartArt was developed as a response to the objectives of the RCN Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Award, developed in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy Practice and Servier Laboratories.

Type 2 diabetes is a major health concern in Bromley by Bow - the rate of the disease has nearly doubled in the past decade, with the incidence in our community around 50% higher than the national average.

We have always integrated art in the work of the Centre, and increasingly people are realising that arts can be used in facilitation and in practice not only as the means to run groups and workshops, but also as the message itself.

HeartArt was developed with this knowledge and understanding.
