The Bangladesh Project

11 February 2010

The Bangladesh Project moved into its next phase in January, when a team from Bromley by Bow enabled a Health Camp to be run in Juri, rural Bangladesh. Dr Julia, Senior Practise Nurse Yvonne (with her daughter Ellie) and Jubeda from the Health Trainers joined Lilu Ahmed and Rev. Helen to attend the event.

Four clinics were held on the four day event. First was an Eye Clinic, with specialist doctors from the Lions Club Hospital of Dhaka. Then an Asthma Clinic, Antenatal and Heart Clinics - in all 1,600 patients were treated and given medication or further treatment. 40 people were taken to Dhaka to have cataracts removed, and other serious cases were dealt with as necessary. All the treatment was free as the vast majority of people attending could not afford even a basic consultation.

The team learnt a great deal from observing how health works in Bangladesh and we have forged some useful partnerships so that the project can proceed. We hope to facilitate a weekly free clinic in Juri for 2010 as we continue to fundraise for a more permanent clinic. As ever, the hospitality was warm, we ate too much and we had a lot of fun in amongst the hard work!
