10 October 2011
On 6th October Bromley by Bow Centre’s Art Jump project revealed its public exhibition of work from four local schools at the View Tube, an exciting community arts venue and viewing platform overlooking the Olympic Park.
Art Jump was an exciting project from our youth arts enterprise, Signs of Life, which worked with local Special Needs Schools in the Olympic boroughs to deliver a series of interactive creative workshops. These tailor made workshops were themed around the Paralympic and Special Games (aimed at children and adults with learning difficulties) in order to empower and inspire these young people in the run up to the London 2012 Games.
The product of these workshops is a lasting creative display that enlivens each school environment. Horizon School in Hackney created a striking photo collage hanging structure composed of stretched fabric and photographs, Charlton School in Greenwich produced a 10 metre outdoor mural situated at the school entrance composed of cut out wooden sporting figures overlaid on a colourful background, Ian Mikardo School in Tower Hamlets crafted an indoor 2.4 metre painting which hangs in the school’s gymnasium using outlines of pupils posing in sporting positions. Finally Phoenix School in Tower Hamlets produced a mural for the school’s bike sheds, featuring a silhouetted cyclist embellished with bicycle parts.
All four schools were invited to the View Tube on 6th October for a private viewing before the exhibition displaying their artwork was opened to the public. There was a tremendous atmosphere as the proud students joined together to celebrate their hard work alongside each other. The pupils were excited to see their artwork displayed opposite the Olympic Park, the symbol of that which had inspired the pieces themselves.

“The theme of the mural encourages the students to connect with and become more aware of the Olympic Games and the Paralympics. For our school we are keen for students to become aware of the Paralympic Games.” Sophy D’Angelo, Art Teacher at Charlton School.
Art Jump has benefitted greatly from the generosity of Barclays Capital and from the time and energy of Barclays Capital volunteers who were directly involved with the delivery of the Art Jump workshops supporting students at different stages of the project.
The Art Jump exhibition will be at the View Tube for a month so go along and have a look at the students’ hard work and creativity!
