The Bromley by Bow Centre is delighted to announce the launch of an exciting partnership that will support young people in East London into sustainable jobs. The programme, launched in partnership with Barclays, is called Capital Talent and is about matching the untapped potential of our young people with the needs of local employers.
Currently young people are bearing the brunt of the UK's unemployment crisis with record numbers of young people being out of work. People living in Bromley by Bow face a daunting range of challenges to finding and sustaining work, including low aspirations and a lack of confidence, alongside a shortage of opportunities to gain workplace experience.
The Capital Talent programme recognises that East London is full of opportunities and has been developed with local employers in mind. By providing the right support, seemingly hard-to-reach local people will not miss out on the employment opportunities on their doorstep.
Each participant will attend 1-2-1 support sessions, group skills workshops and will also complete a supported work placement. Importantly, the programme acknowledges that, in the current job market, personal resilience is key. Barclays is also supporting the programme by providing employability volunteers and inviting the young participants to experience a professional working environment.
In its first year alone Capital Talent will enrol 90 young people on the programme and aims to place at least 30 into sustainable paid employment.
Rob Trimble, the Chief Executive of the Bromley by Bow Centre, said: "Capital Talent is a brilliant example of how we can overcome the obstacles that prevent our young people finding a job and sticking with it. With the support of Barclays we have been able to create a programme that will address the real issues that underlie long-term unemployment and give local young people an added advantage in the race for jobs."
Wendy Lloyd, Head of Community Investment for Corporate and Investment Banking at Barclays, said: "We are delighted to partner with the Bromley by Bow Centre on this exciting project. Raising young people's aspirations is vital to empower the next generation with the skills they need to achieve economic independence and security. The programme will also encourage the take-up of future employment opportunities in the local area."
Capital Talent is currently recruiting young people from East London to take part in the programme and looking to engage East London employers. Click here to find out more.
We have taken our Employment Service to the high street – The Centre's Employment Service is now being delivered from a highly visible shop front location just 4 minutes from the Bromley by Bow Centre. The Service is working under the new banner Local People: Local Jobs.
