Much of Signs of Life's work with local young people is about "expanding horizons": giving young people opportunities for learning and leisure that they would never otherwise have access to, helping them to work in a professional environment and also to see the role that art can play across cultures.
An international team of artists work with local children to deliver professional, breath-taking public art for all kinds of events and spaces. Their work is called upon consistently and the group has built a reputation locally where they are often asked for their services. Children start working at Signs of Life as young as 9 and some stay until they are 19. Up to 15 people attend each week and beyond this the group work with over 400 children across East London delivering art projects.
Through the Expanding Horizons project the group have taken part in outings to the West End, to two art galleries and for a weekend away. They also went on a life-changing trip to Nicaragua in Summer 2008, to work with Funarte.
“I’ve learnt more about art than I ever knew before.”
Mary, aged 9
The Expanding Horizons project is made possible through the support of Bank of America and Barclays Capital.
