The Health Trainer project builds the capacity of the Centre to support and empower local people to adopt healthier lifestyles, with a particular emphasis on stopping smoking, healthy eating, and increasing physical activity.
This project has recruited, trained, mentored and employed local people in the role of Health Trainers. They received an in-depth 14-week accredited training course and on qualification were employed in roles:
- To signpost people into services, activities, support and specialist organisations relevant to supporting their health and health needs;
- To deliver healthy lifestyle activities in partnership with existing services;
- To support and motivate individuals and groups within the community to lead healthier lifestyles (particularly around smoking, diet and physical activity)
The two main aims of this project are:
- 1) To develop health promotion services which are able to work with and reach out to some of the most vulnerable communities and to take health promotion into a grassroots setting.
- 2) To draw from the expertise, experience and skills that lie within the community to develop clear career pathways for local people to take lead roles in the development of health promotion services.
The Team works across a quarter of the London Borough of Tower hamlets and engages with a range of GP practices, clinics and schools to promote their key messages.
This project is generously funded by Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust.
