Island House Community Centre:

Communal Garden with Toddlers' Area

island house view of garden  Bespoke climbing play structure for under fives with planted beds, soft surfacing and mini-beach to the rear. Community consultation led to a tropical theme.
 island house mini-beach

Water feature with rivulets for play together with boulders, sand and wood edging.

Natural wood decking adds to the beach theme.

 island house bespoke stairs

A bespoke metal staircase was designed and installed so that people in the upper hall space could easily access the garden.

Brightly coloured panels were designed by community members in workshops and transposed on to glass. These same panels were repeated in the fencing.

 island house shaded area

Old tired sheds were replaced with wooden cupboards, with surface design featuring abstract patterns of the forest.

A raised area of decking was placed beneath the large tree for carers and children to enjoy, play and perform on.

 island house barbecue

A bespoke metal barbecue with firepit was commissioned for the space, together with brick patterning, mosaic and logs cut for seating.

This encourages the whole community to use the outside space, instead of just the children.

island house under stairs All the space was utilised to its fullest potential, even beneath the stairs where a den space was created. This provides the children with seating and an opportunity to enjoy private contemplation and play.
