Learning

We believe learning is key to community regeneration. It helps to restore people’s self-esteem and raises aspirations, but most importantly it helps to tackle poverty. Through education and training, people can acquire the skills to find work, earn money, and build a better life for themselves and their families.

The Bromley by Bow Centre is now the third largest provider of adult education and training in Tower Hamlets. Over 800 students enrolled for courses at the beginning of the 2007/8 academic year, showing continuing year on year growth. These courses range from English for speakers of other languages, through NVQs geared towards local job opportunities, to Degrees of Success, a BA in Social Enterprise. Many students have a long relationship with learning through the Centre, perhaps starting with an entry level language course and then progressing to a vocational qualification.

Our model places learning at the heart of the community, accessible to people who traditional providers find hard to reach. As with other services, the Learning team has worked hard to reach out into the community, and support people who want to learn new skills, but are nervous or unsure where to start.
