The Board

The Bromley by Bow Centre has a volunteer Board of Directors. These unpaid directors oversee the work of the Senior Management Team, offer advice on direction and strategy, ensure that the organisation is meeting its legal and reporting obligations, and carry ultimate responsibility for the Centre's financial wellbeing. Collectively, the Board has a wealth of experience and expertise across many different fields, helping the Centre to fulfil its full potential as an organisation. They are:

Michael Goold

Michael Goold is Chairman of the Bromley by Bow Centre Board of Directors. He is also Director of the Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, and runs their Group Level Strategy programme. Previously, he was a Senior Fellow at the London Business School's Centre for Business Strategy, and a Vice President of the Boston Consulting Group. Michael has published numerous works on corporate strategy and has contributed articles to the Harvard Business Review.

James Alexander

James Alexander joined the board in September 2008. He has spent most of his career in the private sector, principally in the fields of strategy development, finance and communications. In 2000 he became Managing Director of CAN, Community Action Network, and was more recently Chief Executive of We Are What We Do, the social change movement that creates ways for millions of people to do more small, good things helping to address major social and environmental issues. James also co-founded the social enterprise PrimeTimers, which connects experts in business to third sector organisations, and is on the board of several other social enterprises and organisations.

Philip Alexander

Philip Alexander is an experienced financial services partner with extensive experience in the insurance industry where he has particular knowledge of the accounting and regulatory framework within which insurance businesses operate. Philip joined Littlejohn as a partner in 2010 from BDO's financial services group where he was head of insurance audit and regulatory services. Prior to BDO, he was lead partner of RSM Robson Rhodes' insurance and pensions group. Philip first got involved with the Centre in 2007 and was Treasurer between  2008 and 2011. 

Andrea Baker

Andrea Baker joined Poplar HARCA as Director of Housing in 2008 and is responsible for teams that deliver the gamut of Housing Services to 8,500 households in the heart of London's East End, including Bromley-by-Bow. She has over 20 years experience in the housing sector and has worked her way through all housing roles for Southwark Council, Tower Hamlets Council, Swan Housing Group and Richmond Housing Partnership. Poplar HARCA supports the Bromley by Bow Centre as one of its local community centres and operates a housing office on site.

Simon Bevan

Simon Bevan is a Chartered Accountant and retired as Senior Partner of BDO UK in June 2011, having previously been Managing Partner and an auditor and adviser to clients on corporate transactions, such as IPOs, M&A, international expansion and growth and succession issues. Simon was Chairman of the Association of Partnership Practitioners and a Committee member from 2003 to 2011. He is a Visiting Professor at Xiamen University, China and is currently advising clients on UK/China business strategy. Simon is the Centre's Treasurer and in this role he is responsible for all financial matters.

Mark Camley

Mark Camley took on a new role in January 2012 as Director of Park Operation for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Previously he was Chief Executive of The Royal Parks, the Agency that manages 5,000 acres of central London. Mark studied economics and started his career as a government statistician, but has spent most of his career to date in the justice sector. He has lived in Bow since 2005 and has been associated with the Centre for the last three years. He is also an independent advisor to Poplar HARCA, and is Chair of Governors at Royal Docks Community School in Newham.

Chris Elliott

Chris Elliott is Group Managing Director of G4S Integrated Services and joined the board at the beginning of 2009. G4S are a key partner of the Centre, and Chris brings expertise in financial management, business development and growth to the Board of Directors. Sophie Hoskin

Sophie Hoskin qualified as a Town Planner and spent three years working with Leaside Regeneration on a range of social and physical regeneration projects across East London, particularly in Bromley-by-Bow. During her time with Leaside, Sophie led the Bromley by Bow Centre Space Review, working closely with Rob Trimble, the Board and the Church to develop proposals for new facilities that will enable the Centre to better meet the needs of the local community. Sophie continues to work in East London as Land & Planning Manager for Telford Homes Plc and maintains a keen interest in the Centre.

Shamim Hossain

Shamim Hossain has worked in Tower Hamlets for many years and first became involved with the Centre through her work in community development for Tower Hamlets Council. Shamim has a particular interest in the empowerment of residents of social housing, enabling them to play an active role in the management of their homes and communities. Shamim completed the BA in Social Enterprise at the Centre and has set up her own social enterprise, which has created new jobs and opportunities in the area, particularly for Bengali women.

Shazia Hussain

Shazia Hussain is Service Head Localisation for Tower Hamlets Council with responsibility for building and establishing key relationships with external partners and working in partnership with other public sector agencies such as the Police and NHS Tower Hamlets to develop a locality framework which includes local Service Integrated Teams and Neighbourhood Agreements with residents. She was Director of Tower Hamlets Partnership from 2004 to 2009 and before that spent five years as Director of Community Development at Leaside Regeneration. In 2008, Shazia led the very successful You Decide! Participatory Budgeting project, involving more than 1,000 residents in deciding how a budget of £4.8 million was spent. The project was the largest in the country and has been used as best practice across other local authorities. Shazia has a passion for public participation and throughout her work has been committed to enabling local people to take part in designing and delivering the very best services for their area.

Helen Matthews

Revd Helen Matthews has been the minister of Bromley by Bow United Reformed Church, a key partner of the Bromley by Bow Centre, for the last ten years. Before becoming ordained into the Baptist Church in 1984, Helen was a primary school teacher. She has a vital pastoral role, being involved in rites of passage or celebration with local families, and also works very closely with the local Muslim community. Her position on the board helps to provide continuity and perspective, and ensures that the rich culture of the Centre is maintained and strengthened as the organisation changes and develops.

Abdul Miah

Abdul Miah has over 10 years' management experience working within the inner London education sector and a wealth of knowledge gained working with private companies, charitable organisations and government bodies. He is currently an Employee Relations manager for Enterprise, Innovation and Industry at Hackney Community College. Abdul has an MBA from King's College, University of London, and has completed a HAFIZ programme in theology and jurisprudence. He understands the importance of faith, culture and community cohesion and promotes social integration through education and employment. He is Associate Director of Operations for Social Solutions Enterprise and a trustee of the Balagoinj Education Trust in Bangladesh.

Andrew Prasad

Revd Dr Andrew Prasad served the Church of North India in various roles, including as a local minister before moving to London in 1989 to work for the Council for World Mission, a global development and mission organisation. From 2001 he worked in local churches in south London. Latterly he also served as the convenor of the Church's national Racial Justice and Multicultural Ministry committee. In 2008 Andrew was appointed Moderator of Thames North Synod of the United Reformed Church with responsibility for over 140 churches in the region, of which Bromley by Bow URC is one. Andrew brings with him in-depth intercultural experience, leadership skills and a keen sense of social justice.

Savitha Pushparaja

Savitha Pushparaja is a GP at the Bromley by Bow Health Centre, and therefore has first hand knowledge of the health problems and wider challenges that face local people. As such she is well-placed to ensure the Centre remains focused on the needs of its community.    

Graham Rowbotham

Graham Rowbotham is Company Secretary and Charity Secretary for the Bromley by Bow Centre. Graham works for Linklaters LLP, a leading international law firm with its headquarters in the City of London, where he manages the firm's partnership secretariat. Graham has had many years experience in a variety of management roles with Linklaters and before that with the British Council.

Rachael Saunders

Rachael Saunders is a Labour councillor for Mile End East. She chairs the Council's Health Scrutiny committee and sits on the borough-wide Health and Wellbeing board. She also leads for Tower Hamlets Labour Group on adult social care, health and equalities. Rachael was previously National Women's Officer of the Labour Party and in her current day job works with employers on equalities issues in the workplace. She lives locally with her husband.

Chris Wilson

Chris Wilson has lived and worked in East London for over 25 years and has been involved with the Bromley by Bow Centre since the late 1990s. Chris is a qualified solicitor and is Managing Partner of Hereward & Foster Solicitors based in Canning Town. The firm is committed to providing high quality legal services to communities who may otherwise lack access to such advice. As part of this commitment, Chris runs a Legal Advice Session at the Centre every Thursday. Chris is recognised by his profession for his expertise in personal injury law.

President

Lord Mawson of Bromley by Bow

The story of the Bromley by Bow Centre started with Andrew Mawson in 1984. Awarded an OBE in the Millenium Honours List for his work in Bromley by Bow, and then a Life Peerage in 2007, Lord Mawson sits as a crossbencher in the House of Lords and is an active member of the House. But he will always remain Andrew to the many people who worked with him as he founded and then developed the Centre. Andrew is president of Community Action Network and a founder board member of Poplar HARCA, the registered social landlord. He is currently devoting much of his time to campaigning for a lasting legacy to the London 2012 Olympics, alongside his involvement in Water City.

Vice President

Zenith Rahman

Zenith Rahman's appointment as Vice President of the Bromley by Bow Centre marks her role as one of the founders of the Centre and her tireless commitment as a local resident, councillor and community campaigner. Zenith first got involved in the 1980s and has been instrumental in connecting the Bengali community to the Centre and the services we provide by running numerous projects and events over the last 25 years. Indeed, many of the well-known services that the Bromley by Bow Centre now offers can trace their roots back to small projects that Zenith started many years ago.

 Senior Management Team

The Senior Management Team is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Centre, and delivering the strategy. They are:

Rob Trimble

Rob Trimble is the Chief Executive of the Bromley by Bow Centre. He has held this position since 2002, but he was a volunteer long before that and his association with the Centre goes back almost 20 years. He and his family even lived at the Centre for a time and one of his daughters was born in what is now the finance office! His leadership role is to hold tight to the original vision and inspiration that created the Centre, while developing a long-term sustainable strategy for an organisation that now has a turnover of around £3.5m a year and employs more than 100 people.

Rob is also on the board of the GP partners practice which runs the Health Centre at the Centre, and is active in a number of other community organisations in East London.

Julia Davis

Julia Davis is Deputy Chief Executive of the Bromley by Bow Centre and a partner in the GP partners. A qualified GP, Julia practices at the Health Centre several days a week, keeping her in direct contact with the community that the Centre serves. Julia has worked in East London for many years, and strongly advocates the Centre's integrated approach towards improving health and wellbeing.

Angelos Athanassiades

Angelos Athanassiades is the Director of Finance and Resources at the Centre. He joined the Centre from the private sector, and has been instrumental in introducing a rigorous financial structure to help the Centre run more efficiently and effectively. Angelos understands that the Centre's continued success relies on a strong financial position, and has worked with Rob and the Senior Management Team to develop a sustainable business strategy.

Dan Hopewell

Dan Hopewell is the Director of Services, overseeing the vast and diverse range of activities and projects that the Centre runs. He was previously Director of Learning, and is passionate about the importance of education in helping to create a cohesive and prosperous society. Under his leadership, the old learning directorate expanded year on year, and now the Centre is the third largest provider of adult education in Tower Hamlets.

Beverley Russell

Beverley Russell is the Development and Communications Director at the Centre. She has overall responsibility for the fundraising function of the organisation and has input into the strategy for the Centre. Beverley has worked in the charity sector since 1994 and in fundraising since 1997.

Helal Uddin 

Helal Uddin is Director of Local Partnerships at the Bromley by Bow Centre. Having achieved a Masters in Social Sciences, Helal began his career in Bangladesh before moving to London. He first became involved with the Centre as a volunteer in 1994, before taking an active role in starting the Employment and Welfare service. Having served as Director of Employment, Helal moved to his current role in 2008. Responsible to developing and managing the Centre’s relationships with many local partners, in particular Poplar HARCA, Helal’s main focus is community and housing regeneration.
