Maria Alvarez completed a course in Public Art through Signs of Life at Bromley by Bow Centre in 2003. Since then she has worked with Signs of Life, as well as running workshops with Community Care and ArtEast, also based at the Centre. Maria has gained a BA in Special Education and Speech Therapy, (Autonomous University La Salle, Spain) and a BA (Hons) in Ceramics (Camberwell University of the Arts, London), as well as several other qualifications in art subjects.
Maria’s involvement in different public art projects, especially painting murals, making mosaics, and sculpture installations, in collaboration with different primary, special needs schools and health centres, have given her a clear view of the benefits of collaborative artistic creation. She finds that her teaching skills combined with her artistic background helps to enhance the workshop, creating a vibrant learning atmosphere.
In Maria's own words:
'My work is a combination of different ceramic techniques, a constant formulation through the possibilities of clay. The combination of figurative and functional objects are closely related to nature; its colours, shapes, dynamism, movement and our relation to it, are a constant dialogue in my work.'
Maria has exhibited her work in a variety of galleries and locations, including The Sargadelos Gallery in Galicia, Spain; Artists in the Community, Bromley by Bow Centre, London, and has a forthcoming show at the Stables Gallery in London.
