Miss B - Employment

Miss B is a 25-year-old Bangladeshi woman who, when she first came to the Centre, had been unemployed for more than five years following weak GCSE grades. She had been on several New Deal job preparation courses and Job Centre Plus courses, which she found too basic and unsuitable. As a result she had little hope and had low self-esteem. She was referred to the Centre by a friend who had been successfully placed by the team.

The Bromley by Bow Centre team emphasised that the commitment needed to be two-way in order for her to succeed. We jointly created an action plan, then provided job-related training opportunities, job preparation and personal development workshops, and secured a 12-week work placement to build on, and improve, her employability skills.

The Centre was also able to show that she would be £120 a week better off in work. As a result of Miss B’s progress and increased confidence, after 18 months she accepted a Centre-brokered job as a full-time receptionist in a dental surgery.

Two years on, Miss B is delighted with her job. She is now aspiring to do further work-related training to allow her to become a medical receptionist.
