SHED is a successful youth music and arts programme in North London, which engages young people with music and self-expression. It provides a safe developmental space for young people aged 11-25 who are able to express their ideas, develop skills and produce recordings with the help of professionals. SHED has had four sell-out shows and produced a compilation album.
With the support of Bank of America, Music SHED East brings the successful SHED project to Bow, East London. The project is partnering with Ian Mikardo School, Streets of Growth, the Eastside Youth Centre, Old Ford Housing and the British New Music Academy on Three Mills Island. Using the dedicated recording facilities at Eastside Youth Centre, the project brings together young people from across the neighbourhood rather than working with segregated groups. It works to sustain young people's interest through training them in recording, mixing and music and sound engineering.
A core group of six young people helped to design and build the music production studio. Some have been involved in the physical construction of the studio, while others entered the studio design competition. This group have been involved from the very start of the project, and are excited about involving others.
SHED East is managed by Rick Levene, ricklevene@bbbc.org.uk.
