Paula Haughney

Paula Haughney is a resident artist at the Bromley by Bow Centre, and runs the sculpture studio. She is perhaps best described as a natural object maker, who invests the influences she soaks up from myriad sources into the materials she works with. The main material she uses is stone, but she also works with wood and metal. paula haughney: commissionsShe is interested in all types of stone, from granite and soapstone, enjoying the different colours, textures, and individual ways in which they are approached. Paula often uses the Direct method, which allows the sculpture to develop according to the stone.

Paula has completed many public commissions including Homerton Hospital, St Katherine’s Dock, BP Brussels and Herne Bay Kent. Her current project is a large work in metal for Corpus Christi Church in Wokingham. Her work is often site-specific, helping to tell the story about a place and the people who use it.

In Paula’s own words:

'I think about how the material was formed as I work with it - whether fire formed or once swimming in the sea, as Portland Limestone. Often I use stone that was once part of other constructions, such as Old London Bridge and Stratford Post Office. This is not just about saving money or recycling, but about taking my turn to reinterpret something that already has a story, and add myself to that story. “The subject mater varies, as do my influences. Recently, I have been inspired by Manga and Anime. The sculptures reflect an inner childlike self we usually keep hidden.'

Paula accepts small and large commissions and is happy to discuss any proposed projects. To make an enquiry or make an appointment to visit the studio, please contact her via email at info@paulahaughney.co.uk or through her website http://www.paulahaughney.co.uk/
